The Obermann Center for Advanced Studies at the University of Iowa has opened applications for the Spring 2026 Obermann International Fellowships (OIF)—a prestigious and flexible program designed to support international scholars and creative professionals.
What the OIF Fellowship Offers?
Selected fellows will benefit from:
- $2,000 stipend to help with travel and lodging costs
- University of Iowa health insurance coverage during your stay
- Office space at the Obermann Center
- Full access to UI libraries and temporary UI affiliation
- Participation in scholarly exchanges, seminars, and lectures
- Official letter of invitation for institutional and visa purposes
- Guidance on accommodation and practical living arrangements
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be active researchers or artists affiliated with institutions outside the U.S.
- OR be independent researchers/artists with a strong track record, also based outside the U.S.
- Have a research project or artistic practice that aligns with existing University of Iowa programs
- Be able to participate in campus life and academic discussions (English proficiency required)
- Be ready to reside in Iowa City during their fellowship term.
Note: The Obermann Center awards up to eight fellowships per academic year.
Fellowship Program Timeline
- Fellowship Period (Spring 2026): Between January 20 and May 8, 2026
- Minimum stay: 2 weeks
- Maximum stay: One full UI semester.
Fellows choose their preferred dates within the Spring 2026 semester.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit:
- A CV
- Desired start and end dates within Spring 2026 (Jan 20–May 8)
- A 2,000-word research proposal justifying its relevance to the University of Iowa
- A one-page bibliography related to the proposal
- Two reference letters (only if you do not hold a Ph.D. or terminal degree)
- Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, transcript, or video interview option).
Application & Visa Support
Once selected, you’ll:
- Provide passport and financial proof ($1,000/month, plus $500/month per J-2 dependent)
- Complete visa documents via the UI’s iHawk system
- Receive your invitation letter and DS-2019 within 1–2 weeks
- Schedule a J-1 visa appointment
- The Obermann Center covers your $185 J-1 visa fee!
