The Biomedical Engineering Unit at Makerere University (Uganda), in partnership with Case Western Reserve University (USA), is inviting applications for a fully funded Master’s Scholarship Program in Biomedical Engineering (BME). This initiative is proudly funded by the U.S. NIH – Fogarty International Center, aimed at building robust capacity in medical technology innovation and research leadership in Uganda.
What’s the Goal?
This scholarship program is designed to support and empower MSc students with innovative project ideas in Biomedical Engineering and related fields—particularly those focused on:
- Cardiovascular diseases
- Blood disorders
- Chronic movement disorders
Students will also benefit from mentorship and research collaboration between the two universities, opening the door to a career in impactful medical technology development.

Who Can Apply?
This opportunity is open to Ugandan nationals who:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a Health-related field from a recognized university.
- Are currently enrolled in MSc programs at Makerere University, especially in:
- Technology Innovation and Industrial Development (CEDAT)
- Computer Science (COCIS)
- Immunology and Clinical Microbiology
- Health Informatics
- Bioinformatics
- Have a demonstrated interest in medical device development or technology innovation.
- Have a research idea aligned with biomaterials and drug delivery, point-of-care diagnostics, biomedical imaging, or AI/data analytics in healthcare.
- Have shown good academic performance in the first year of their MSc.
- Are willing to undergo an oral interview as part of the selection process.
Note: Qualifying MSc students are encouraged to discuss their project ideas with the program team for collaborative development.
Application and Selection Timeline
The last date to apply for the Master’s Scholarship jointly offered by Makerere University and Case Western Reserve University is April 25, 2025. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interviews scheduled for May 2, 2025, and successful candidates will be notified by May 16, 2025.
