In the wake of a powerful earthquake that struck central Myanmar earlier this week, the government has announced the temporary suspension of tourist visa issuance for all international travelers in April 2025. This decision, confirmed by the Ministry of Immigration and Population, comes as part of an emergency response to ongoing safety concerns and nationwide repair efforts.
The earthquake, which measured 6.8 on the Richter scale, caused significant structural damage to historical sites, transportation infrastructure, and public services across key tourist regions, including Bagan and Mandalay. Authorities have since launched a full-scale recovery operation focused on rebuilding damaged roads, restoring power and communication lines, and assessing the safety of hotels and attractions frequented by tourists.
“Due to the unforeseen natural disaster and the ongoing national repair efforts, we are suspending tourist visa applications effective immediately until further notice,” the ministry stated in an official release.
Safety First!
Myanmar’s government emphasized that the move is not a restriction on travel but a temporary protective measure to ensure visitor safety while emergency operations continue. Travelers currently in the country are advised to remain in safe zones, stay updated via official government alerts, and avoid travel to affected regions.
International airlines and embassies have also been notified of the suspension. Tour operators and travel agencies have begun rescheduling or canceling planned trips, with many offering full refunds or flexible rescheduling options to affected tourists.
When Will Visas Resume?
While there is no confirmed date for the resumption of tourist visa services, officials stated that evaluations will be conducted weekly to determine when infrastructure and safety levels return to acceptable standards. Restoration teams are working around the clock to speed up the process.
Travelers planning trips to Myanmar in the coming weeks are urged to monitor updates through Myanmar’s official immigration portal and embassy advisories in their home countries.
