CENTRO “Rooted + Relational” Hybrid Fellowship 2025 Open

Are you a scholar, artist, or ABD doctoral student passionate about Puerto Rican Studies? The Center for Puerto Rican Studies (CENTRO) at Hunter College has just announced its 2025–2026 Rooted + Relational Fellowship Program, and it’s officially accepting applications! This prestigious hybrid fellowship invites you to become part of a dynamic cohort focused on this year’s theme: “Boricuas in Relation.”

Whether you’re a creative or an academic, this is your opportunity to explore how Puerto Ricans engage with other racial and ethnic communities across time, geography, and migration experiences—all while gaining financial support and being part of a transformative research initiative.


Fellowship Benefits

CENTRO offers generous support to selected fellows across three unique categories:

1# Hybrid Fellows

    • Up to five fellows will each receive $25,000
    • Ideal for researchers and artists unable to relocate to New York City
    • PhD not required, but a strong background in Puerto Rican Studies is essential

2# Artist-In-Residence

    • One artist will receive a $75,000 award
    • Open to artists in any discipline who align with the annual theme
    • Must relocate and be in residence at CENTRO in NYC for the academic year

3# Dissertation Fellows

    • Up to two fellows will each receive $25,000
    • Must be ABD (All But Dissertation) in a related field by July 1, 2025
    • Can be hybrid or in-person (in-person fellows must be on-site at least 3 days/week)
    • One of your reference letters must be from your dissertation advisor.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for one of the fellowship tracks, applicants must:

  • Demonstrate extensive engagement in Puerto Rican Studies (not limited to academic PhDs)
  • Align their project with the 2025–2026 theme: Boricuas in Relation, exploring cultural, political, creative, spiritual, and linguistic connections between Puerto Ricans and other communities (e.g., Kānaka Maoli, Filipino, Black, and more)
  • Submit a project proposal, CV, and 3 letters of reference
  • Commit to weekly seminars, public events, and workshops hosted by CENTRO.

The last date to apply for the CENTRO Rooted + Relational Fellowship 2025–2026 is May 4, 2025, at 11:59 PM (Eastern Time). Selected fellows will begin their appointment in August 2025.
