The Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) invites global scholars to apply for the 2025 AKS Hanmun Fellowship (Advanced Course), a prestigious opportunity designed to cultivate expertise in Hanmun for Korean studies.

This advanced fellowship is more than just a study program—it’s an immersive experience into classical texts, research practices, and Korean academic culture at one of the world’s leading institutions for Korean studies.


What is the AKS Hanmun Fellowship?

The AKS Hanmun Fellowship aims to support and train future scholars of Korean Studies by deepening their understanding of Hanmun (Classical Chinese), which is essential for reading traditional Korean texts. The 12th Advanced Course is set to run from September 1 to December 19, 2025, and includes:

  • Lectures
  • Recitations
  • Guided research
  • On-site academic field tours.

What Support Will You Receive?

Selected fellows will enjoy comprehensive support, including:

  • Round-trip airfare (economy class)
  • Monthly living expenses: 750,000 KRW
  • On-campus accommodation at the AKS guesthouse
  • Accident insurance.

Who Can Apply?

The program is exclusively open to international students who meet the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate, master’s, or PhD students majoring in Korean Studies at overseas universities
  • Candidates for master’s or doctoral degrees are also eligible
  • Korean nationals or graduates of Korean universities are not eligible
  • Applicants must have completed at least one basic Hanmun (Hanja) course
  • Advanced Korean language proficiency is required, as the entire program is conducted in Korean.
